Welcome

I’m an economist interested in how markets, regulation and incentives shape healthcare, innovation and public services. I’m a professor at BI Norwegian Business School, where I teach and do research  – and every year I introduce new business students to the fascinating world of economics. Some see the fascination, others don’t.

My research focuses on industrial organization and regulation, with a particular interest in pharmaceutical markets and healthcare. I have published in journals such as The Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Journal of Economics and Management Strategy and Journal of Health Economics.

In 1984, Ronald Reagan signed a law that changed the way we pay for medicines. Forty years later, the consequences show up every time we visit a pharmacy, even here in Norway. Blåkopi – a book I am currently writing – tells the story of that law, and what competition in pharmaceutical markets actually delivers, and to whom.

I serve on the Board of Directors of Nye Veier, a state-owned company responsible for planning and building major road infrastructure in Norway.

From 2010 to 2018, I served as provost at BI, overseeing program development, accreditation and international cooperation. I currently serve on the International Advisory Council of TIAS School for Business and Society in the Netherlands.

I am a partner in Vista Analyse, a social science consultancy in Oslo.
